Immunosuppression related to acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and chemotherapy for treating AML places patients at risk for serious infections, including invasive fungal infections (IFIs). The management of such opportunistic infections is a critical component in the care of patients with this type of leukemia. Contemporary management of IFIs has become challenging due to the changing epidemiology of these infections and the difficulties related to their diagnosis. Since monotherapy may be unsuccessful, other strategies, including combination therapy and immune enhancement strategies, have been investigated to treat IFIs.
The satellite broadcast will discuss recent changes in the epidemiology of IFIs and available methods for their identification in patients with AML. Current and emerging approaches to the treatment of IFIs will be explored. Additionally, the broadcast will include a debate by program faculty on important issues associated with AML-related IFIs, in a format that will encourage audience participation. The ultimate goal of this educational program is the clinical application of program content to improve outcomes for patients being treated for AML.
Educational Objectives
